We moved out to the country about a decade ago. While out exploring, we had come across countless old barns and outbuildings and would purchase some good old barn wood here and there for our own projects. After much prodding from friends and family, we thought others would share our love for this incredible wood, and so began our little Etsy shop.
We love "rescuing" and repurposing old wood. All of our reclaimed barn wood is locally sourced, and our salvaged trees are storm-felled off our own land. Most of what we bring home to the shop is rough-sawn oak from old tobacco barns, sheds, and haylofts. What's so neat is we can often tell what the structure was used for when we first cut the wood. We love every step of the process: the sawdust, old nails, holes, and rough-sawn edges, the silvery weathering of the wood over many decades, paint that was applied long ago by who knows what hands.
Each piece of wood we bring into our shop, be it salvaged trees or reclaimed barn boards, has a story. A story of countless years bracing against weather of all kinds, listening to the conversations (and complaints) of farmers. And further back, a story of roots and branches and leaves, of changes of season, of first emerging through the soil to catch that first ray of sunshine. If only we could know what each piece of wood has witnessed in its time on earth, what a story it could tell!
We're just the next chapter in the story. Aside from sawing and screws, we leave the wood untouched wherever possible. This is by design. We hold a great deal of respect and appreciation for the materials we use to make our products, and we're thrilled to be able to add another chapter to its history.
